As part of my journey to complete my Master's degree, I was fortunate enough to travel to Costa Rica for one of my final classes. The anticipation of the trip had me excited for both the academic side and the adventure awaiting me in this beautiful country. After a quick flight over the East Coast and Florida Keys, I found myself soaring over the lush mountains that divide Costa Rica—an area about the size of my home state of Ohio. It’s incredible how much natural beauty can fit into such a small space.
Arriving four days early for class meant I had time to explore before the coursework began. With a rented car and a sense of adventure, I made my way to the Pacific Coast, ready to take in all that this tropical paradise had to offer. The laid-back coastal towns of Quepos, Jaco, and Manuel Antonio National Park provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable few days.

A Taste of Adventure
From the moment I set foot on the Pacific Coast, it felt like every corner I turned offered something new and exciting. One of the highlights was a thrilling fishing charter, where I had the chance to cast my line into the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by the scenic beauty of Costa Rica’s coastline. After a successful day on the water, I went snorkeling, swimming over a shipwreck that had become a vibrant habitat for marine life.
Kayaking through the mangroves was another adventure that I’ll never forget. The tranquil waters were framed by a maze of greenery, creating a serene and almost otherworldly atmosphere. The stillness of the mangroves, combined with the sounds of the jungle around me, felt like a moment suspended in time.
Wildlife Encounters Like No Other
Costa Rica is famous for its incredible biodiversity, and I was lucky enough to witness some of its most iconic creatures. On my very first day, I was treated to the stunning sight of a pair of Macaws soaring overhead, their colorful feathers cutting through the sky. Later, I spotted breaching Humpback Whales off the coast—an awe-inspiring sight that left me speechless.
But perhaps the most unforgettable moment came when I encountered my first Sloth. Hanging lazily in a tree, this slow-moving creature seemed to embody the tranquil pace of life in Costa Rica. I could hardly believe I was seeing one in person, having only ever seen them in documentaries or pictures before. Their deliberate, slow movements made them seem like they belonged in a world all their own.
Reflection on the Journey
My time in Costa Rica was a beautiful reminder of how travel offers so much more than just new places—it provides opportunities to connect with nature, immerse yourself in different cultures, and experience life in a way you never thought possible. The wildlife, the landscapes, and the people of Costa Rica made this trip one I’ll always cherish.
As I made my way to class a few days later, I felt recharged, inspired, and grateful for the adventure that had come before the academic work. Costa Rica truly lives up to its reputation as a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. I’ll carry the memories of the Macaws, the whales, and the sloths with me as I continue my journey, both in my studies and in life.
